Sitting here outside leaning against a building at the Univ. of Fribourg as it rains is pretty
nice. It’s midnight and I think Andrew
and I are the only ones on campus. In 7
hours I am going to Geneva
to meet the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) and this
program has been pretty exciting so far.
Maybe it’s because one day was on Human Rights and the next day was on
Refugee Law. A representative from the
UNHCR came here and spoke and after talking to him after class I can sense how
jaded he was of all the politics going on in his department. The UNHCR has to constantly seek funding from
countries and it seems like they’re so often pressured to do what they don’t
want to do b/c of the funding given to them by certain countries. This is the freakin United Nations. How encouraging is that.
Between London, Paris, Venice, Florence, and Rome, I’ve
probably enjoyed Venice
the most. I’m not sure why. Maybe it’s
because they’re not allowed to do anything to the exterior of their buildings…so
everything looks the way it did many years back. The architecture was beautiful and just the
fact that there are these canals running through everywhere was pretty
cool. I guess it’s what I envisioned Europe to be before this trip. After traveling around for a lil less than 2
weeks, it’s been really nice being here in Fribourg, Switzerland. I get to experience this small European town
setting. I don’t see tourists everywhere
I go like the other cities I’ve gone to.
The only line I’ve had to wait in was at the Jazz Festival here at an
Indian food tent. So it’s like the 850th
anniversary of Fribourg and they’re having a 3 week Jazz Festival here. It’s nice.
I went to the mall today and got myself these suspenders with the Switzerland
flag all over. Impulse buy.
My dorm room is pretty nice.
We all get our own rooms. 2 doors
away from me are these 2 North Koreans.
They’re about in their mid 30s and they’re doctors. They’re from Pyongyang so I guess they’re pretty loyal to
the government? It was weird cuz they
were smoking outside my dorm and we reached eye contact. I think we both had this moment where we knew
we were both Korean. I gave them a lil
bow and with the little Korean I know I started speaking to them. For a bit they kept speaking to me in German
and I was confused. I just kept speaking
to them in Korean b/c I was pretty sure they were Korean. After talking to them a bit they said they
were from Pyongyang. They’re here to learn German and they’re
really nice. I’m not sure how to talk to
them or act around them but I guess just being comfortable around them will
make them comfortable around me. I think
it was really weird for them cuz I’m a Korean-American? They seemed kind of thrown off but maybe it’s
cuz my Korean sucks and they were just confused. We ate lunch together and afterwards they
were smoking their North Korean cigarettes.
Afterwards, they gave Andrew a pack so Andrew now has his very own pack
of North Korean cigarettes. I guess it’s
ice breaking time with them. I keep
thinking about JSA when I think about our encounters. I got a phone here.
If you want my number, ask.
Calling America
costs me over $3 a minute so I don’t think I’ll be making too many calls
home. I hope my parents think I’m alive
though I haven’t talked to them in a while.
I don’t think my sister relays the emails I send her to them. Erica if you’re reading this please do so
thanks. How’s your car?
Maybe next time I’ll post up pictures of everything…but
don’t hope on it my last entry was on Valentine’s Day we’ll see how long it
takes for me to post another entry after this one.

| this is probably the best start to ficb IM sports...soccer, softball, and dodgeball all came up this week making us 3-0. randomly dodgeball is the most intense IM sport out there. a lot of arguments and pissed off ppl with names being thrown everywhere...i think the dude called one of us a pickle cuz he said something like "hey pickle why dont you throw the ball". he kind of reminds me of the bad guy in the karate kid with his tight muscle shirt all brawn look...chan always instigates, which makes things extra interesting and sadly a lot more rewarding when we win.
so im kind of fired but not. i dont have office hours but i can just work in whatever basketball games i want. i thought it was just me so i felt kinda bad that i slacked so much last semester but a lot of guys at work are in my situation...so it's not that bad really.
i got a valentine's day card in the mail from...my mom. a random surprise but very cool. thanks mom.
speaking of family, my sister got facebook? i guess. now we can stalk each other. werd. my dad's turning 60 this may and apparently it's a big thing so i guess we're supposed to throw a big party for him. too bad my dad doesn't like parties so i guess we're all going to vegas compliments of my sister and her bankroll. vegas is probably the best gift for my dad...sadly.
sg night was pretty fun, and funny. i cant really explain it but maybe dah tahk's xanga can.
chan and i were walking back today from gregor and there was this wolf dog just sitting on top of a car next to our place. it scared the crap out of us. it just stood there staring at us. so i took a pic of it...
just kidding...here it is...
